People who can't spell shouldn't post signs.

People who can't spell shouldn't post signs.

Because people with chronic editor-itis like me can't stand to see your sloppiness shoved into the public eye.

Somebody today was either trying to put a building on the market or publicly announce the gift of it to his lover/mother/sister/female companion.

What else am I supposed to think about a 'For Sal' sign?

Yes, I realize grammar and spelling, unlike science, are absolutely arbitrary -- mere human conventions. But if you're human, you should probably observe a few human conventions.

Learn when to write its, as opposed to it's. Your and you're.

And I won't have to restrain myself so hard from ripping your sign down to relieve my agony.

Years ago, I drove down to look at an apartment for rent. The building had a sign: "stuido for rent." I never went inside. It was probably a lovely "stuido."

While I am completely the same way, I am guilty of the occasional typo, and I am honored that you read my blog.

Thank you, Adena and Lilia, for your insights.

One more thought: Within the cybermists of the Internet dwells a demented demon, with a name too foul and terrifying for mere mortals to pronounce, and whose only delight is to watch for people who mock the grammar or spelling of others in their posts.

This demon then uses his underworld powers to tweak the mocker's post and insert a typo or spelling gaffe into it, thus punishing said mocker's hubris.

I am due for a visit from this demon.
