September seems to be mantis season.
Of all the insects in the world, these harmless giants (unless you are another bug) seem to be the most intelligent or the most sentient, at least to me.
This one was sitting by my porch light the other night. Probably saying, "Who the &&^% is that dude with the camera?"

What he was saying was, "I could easily eat that big bug with the one lens eye"...
I like mantids (mantises?)(mantisii?) (more than one mantis)
He was likely catching bugs that came up by the porch light.
Leslie: You know, You are probably right. He was sizing me up. Good thing I didn't stick around too long.
Adena: That's an unlikely duo. I'd place my bets on the toad if they ever had a smack-down, though.
I had a toad that lived for about six years. Fat little fella -- loved to burrow down in mud.
While I am soooo not a bug person when I encounter them (I make my husband deal with them) I really like this photo. Insects are truly beautiful in still life.
I loved his/her mantis-y expression but I'm actually not too happy about the photo -- I've had them come out a lot clearer.
He/she just wouldn't stay still -- kept running around the lamp and not letting me get the camera focused.
Can I lift MANTY? borrow him? to show Cindy whose mascot is a mantis?
Well what I should do actually is give her a Mantis Alert and send her over here to see yours.
Haha! The little dude does look a bit puzzled.
Kat: Lift away! Just don't squeeze him too hard.
Lizza: Exactly -- what other insect do You know of that is capable of such expression?
Love the pic - you can tell he has a lot of personality.
omg.. is so cute....
nice pic yay
Thanks for visiting my blog.. :D
Great shot. It looks like he's curious about the camera. They do get drawn to the lights, but at this time of year those male mantids are really only interested in one thing...
I LOVE this photo! Look at her face! Her little tilted expression of wonder! I have only seen one this summer, also a female (how do I know this? I have no idea. I just know) and she looked up from her work and tilted her little face towards me and I swear she said "Beautiful day, hey?"
:-) Wonderful blog... just found you.
BRILLIANT photo!!
That thing looks enormous - was it zoomed in? How big is it?
The ones in Australia don't seem nearly that big
