What an incredible, heart-rending short story, by H.C. McNeile. Read on my lunch break today.

Attempting not to be a spoiler, but have come to the conclusion that "Actor" in this story is, quite simply, an a$$. He claims to have had just two options: Lie or tell the cruel truth. In reality, he had a third choice, one of neither cruelty nor self-deluding false compassion. But that third choice would have required involvement, work, commitment.
