I have a crappy old deck by my house that needs to go away. I have never been a sit-on-the-deck sort of person so I haven't given it the loving care that it needs.
I think I want to replace it with a little greenhouse, one that I could build myself. That in turn would be perfect for getting an early start on another daydream I had today: clearing out another big square of boring lawn grass and planting rosemary, basil, thyme, oregano, sage, etc -- enough to start a small herb business.
What would I need? Some lumber, sand, glass panes, an electric heater (greenhouses don't stay magically warm at night -- they need help with that).

November daydreams

that is a lovely dream... a dream-come-true-easily
project
I can just smell the kitchen-aromas-to-be
Thank You, Kat.
I already have lavender, horehound, mint, peppermint, thyme, chives, rosemary and sage growing scattered here and there. And I plant basil every summer.
I'm just curious as to whether I could actually grow enough, in one dedicated area, to make a small profit selling it.
many top-notch restaurants buy fresh/organic from smaller suppliers .....
I just told Sweetie about my idea during lunch break. She's in support. Or, truth is, She humors me. She doesn't like to be outside the way I do.
It would definitely be organic. I don't spray -- except a little bit of Round Up on the far edge of the yard when poison ivy pops up there.
I am already itching to rip up the sod and blend some sand with the Virginia clay and tuck some seeds into sun-warmed earth.
Such are November daydreams.
What a beautiful dream!!! I hope this is one dream that will manifest, it is too lovely, too homey, and caring to fall by the wayside. And you've mentioned some of my most favorite herbs, their aromas never fail to make my memories dance, and to make new ones over dinner.
:-)
Thank You, Pixie Dust.
I have the space, the desire and the skills or rather, I should say, I have spent a lifetime in the care and love of plants.
What I don't have is a heap of money, such as it might cost for a greenhouse kit, but I do know how to save my pennies and that I will do.
Sounds cool.
I just wonder why you are talking about gardening when we actually got snow this week up here. Seems like the wrong season to me, but what do I know.
Ah, Chase, this is the season when gardeners indulge in fantasies of Eden, with reality banished by winter's chill.
During the rest of the year, weeds, bugs and heat make a mockery of their aspirations that is visible every time they step outside.
oh yes! and in the middle of winter the seed catalogs arrive in the mail to fuel you on...
i think you could do that ECD, it may be a dream but dreams come true. And with small beginnings, that's where you'll start your greenhouse. Good luck!
I'm not a deck person either and haven't laid out in the sun for almost 30 years (grin). So a few years ago I hired some handymen to turn that deck into a covered porch, and it is where my feral cat colony comes up to eat meals every day now. Then last year a possum family came and two raccoons. My porch is now "wild critter land" and I LOVE it!
I am also a gardener with 3 flower gardens in my front yard. Much love and success to you with your gardening plans. Big fun!!
xoxoxo
that is a dream which is already rooted and ready to roll... great one too... good luck and I believe in you!!!
Yek, Laura, Lyn, Kat thank You all for Your comments and support. This season, I have broken ground.
