Photographic frustration

I was sitting at my desk, half-dressed, finishing up the weekly column I write for a local paper, when I saw something outside the window that brought me to my feet in excitement.

Not twenty feet away, perched on the raspberry canes post, was a hawk, a big, grey hawk or falcon. Naturally, my camera was in the car. In the ten seconds that it took me to dash out the door half dressed and barefoot, retrieve the camera from the car and get back to the study room where I could take its picture, the majestic bird had already gone.

For ten years, I have been sitting in this chair, looking out at this view and I have never seen such a sight. And today it happened and I wasn't ready for it.

  1. oh my goodness
I can well imagine your thrill and excitement!
    Dare I tell you this?
I was sitting at my desk at my computer when I glanced up and across to my kitchen window
There on the branch of the Dogwood Tree sat a Red-Shouldered Hawk
    He sat for several minutes
I did not have to rise from my seat. My camera was a short reach away and I was able to photograph my visitor
ECD, I will repost that photograph for you to see and enjoy
I am so HAPPY that you felt such excitement...I love Birds of Prey!
I am sorry you did not get the photo!
I would like to have seen your bird too!

  2. Kat: There is merit in being prepared. I'll pop over to Your blog a little later today to see that pic - as well as to comment on all those Saturnid photos that You posted -- so beautiful!

  3. Although a shame you did not capture the hawk on film, you were indeed ready for this beautiful sight. You looked up in time to share a special moment between the hawk and yourself, yes?

The only caveat would be (as all fisherman will silently attest) with no photo the size of the hawk can vary with the telling, no?

    ;-)

  5. Pixiedust: That is true. I can still see him sitting there, in my mind, a fierce, beautiful bird, a marvel of evolution/creation.

I love my little yard! I've seen turtles, toads, woodchucks, rabbits, finches and even a snake out there -- and now this fine feathered fellow.

Kat: Uh-oh. Pay no attention to those old postings. That was all the work of my evil twin brother, out of prison on parole.

  6. Some moments - are kept more beautiful in your mind - than a camera could ever capture.

  8. Oh, ECD! I didn't know you didn't have your camera handy?! Why would you do that???
(Please forgive me...you are so sweet and tease-able.)

  9. Leslie: I would do that because it actually belongs to my job and has been loaned to me for the work that I do. If I left it in my house and it turned up needed, I would have a lot of explaining to do. So it stays in my car most of the time, since I can't leave my car behind.

  13. So, tell us about this column you write. I'm intrigued....

  14. expensive? can be but doesn't have to be as there are so many models.... and even some low-end ones that do a good enough job and can serve as insurance to save a moment on film that would otherwise be lost

  17. Melanie: I'll fix Your link pronto.

Claudia: The day that I can't take pleasure in a new leaf uncurling, or a mantis on the wall or the flight of a bird above, is the day that they sprinkle the dirt over me and fight over my will.

  19. Leslie: Relax, don't be sorry -- I laughed right along with You. If a person can't take a little teasing from a friend, perhaps they need to up their anti-depressant dosage. (o:

  20. Oh, good. I would just hate if you thought I was too much.
I was hoping you viewed it as being held down and tickled breathless...
